SATURDAY 18 SEPTEMBER 9:05pm Laochra Gael – Na Downeys As part of Camogie’s Centenary celebrations, TG4 will have an extended segment of camogie programming this coming Saturday night. A special edition Laochra Gael documentary profiling the legendary Downey sisters will be broadcast at 9:05pm while viewers will have another chance to see last year’s Foras na Gaeilge All-Ireland Camogie Final afterwards at 9:35pm. Angela Downey made her debut for the Kilkenny Senior Camogie team in 1972 and her twin sister Ann followed in 1974. In their glorious careers, each of them won 12 All Ireland Medals each with the county. The Downey Era, as it became known, was between 1985 and 1991 when Kilkenny won 7 All Ireland titles in a row. As well as being highly skilled and supremely fit, the twins were always fiercely competitive. Winning was everything, second best was not an option. They were natural leaders and Angela often took on the role of captain, as did Ann. They won 22 county titles. Controversy sometimes came their way too. Angela was suspended for the 1988 Club Championship and many thought she was punished harshly. Ann took over as captain of the team and they went on to win the match, this was one of her proudest moments. Controversy again surfaced when the Team of the Century was selected with Angela being chosen and Ann overlooked. But what cannot be denied is the status of the twins in the history of camogie and the role that they played within the game. In this programme, their abilities and impact are celebrated and assessed. Contributors include Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Jo Nic Uaildrich, former Kilkenny player, Shem Downey, father Clem Ryan, broadcaster, Noelle O’Driscoll, former Cork & Kilkenny player, Thomas Ryan, former Kilkenny Camogie manager and Miriam Uí Cheallacháin, Uachtarán Chumann Camógaíochta na nGael. The Downey’s Laochra Gael documentary was produced for TG4 by Nemeton productions. SATURDAY 18 SEPTEMBER 9:35pm All Ireland Gold Camogie Another chance to see Tipperary v Cork in the Foras na Gaeilge All-Ireland Camogie Final from 2003. Tipperary and Cork have dominated the camogie scene for the last few years and it was fitting that they met in this year’s All-Ireland final. In fact, it was Tipp’s 5th final in as many years. Cork were defending champions, having beaten Tipperary in last year’s decider, but Tipp added to their 3-in-a-row won in 1999, 2000 and ’01 with a hard won victory by 2-11 to 1-11.
