GFHAA State Championships ready for lift-off in Melbourne

Up to 500 players and mentors will take part in the annual Gaelic Football & Hurling Association of Australasia State Championships which begins this Thursday in Melbourne and is played over three days.

The GFHAA State Championships have a rich history going all the way back to 1971 when the very first one was played between New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia in Melbourne.

The teams are made up of the best club players in five Australian states and New Zealand with senior and intermediate championships in Gaelic football, hurling, Ladies football, and camogie.

“We are delighted to have our annual event running again after a 2 year break because the Covid,” says Paraic McGrath, PRO of the Gaelic Football & Hurling Association of Australasia.

“La Trobe Sports Stadium will have two pitches running for three days and we look forward welcoming everyone to Melbourne. Games are 9-a-side, 15 minutes a half, with the finals going for 20. With six different competitions, it promises to be a great weekend.

“We are also delighted to welcome Uachtarain CLG Labhras MacCarthaigh, CEO LGFA Helen O’Rourke, CLG Cuige Laighean Pat Teehan and World GAA Cathaoirleach Niall Erskine and want to extend our thanks to O’Neills and the Gaelic Games Victoria committee for hosting.”
