John Sheridan Presented with GAA Presidents Award

John Sheridan, a Cavan Man, has been involved with Kilmacud Crokes GAA Club since 1972.  He was chairman of the football committee for many years and a member of the executive committee of the club and last weekend was the Ladies Football representative to receive a GAA President’s Award.

In 1996 John started Ladies Football in the club with 1 team and set up a Ladies Football Committee where he was chairman until 2011.  He expanded the ladies section to the position where it is now, the largest Ladies Football club in the country, consisting of over 750 members and over 30 teams.  The club has a thriving nursery where every Saturday morning you will find John assisting with the coaching of over 100 young players.  John loves any social event bringing people together and has organised a number of activities in 2016 to cater for every age group including organising the 20^th anniversary of Ladies Football in Kilmacud, the events all received great praise from those within and outside of the club.  

John started the All Ireland U 14 7’s in 2004 in Kilmacud Crokes and this competition has grown from strength to strength to the point where it is the most popular event of its type in the country attracting clubs from every corner of the island.  ‘Sevens Saturday’ at Kilmacud Crokes captures the essence of what John is all about as he is up with the dawn and toiling until the last goal has been scored, the last player has been fed and the last trophy given out.

John served as Chairman of the Dublin Ladies Executive for 3 years and was the Chairman of the Fundraising Committee running the Dublin Ladies Golf Classic and is the Dublin delegate to Central Council, a position he has held for over 10 years.  Along with all the work John does at Club, County and National levels, he also works tirelessly with local schools and organising coaching and schools links and a school blitz every June, a day where the sun always shines as John finishes off the day cooking burgers on the BBQ.

Without John’s immense work commitment, Kilmacud Crokes Ladies Football would not be able to achieve the success it has attained.  He has spent several hours a day for over 20 years on a voluntary basis to bring Kilmacud Crokes Ladies Football to where it is today, he is Mr Ladies Football in Kilmacud Crokes.

John’s beloved wife Rita sadly passed away in October 2014, and their children Brian, Rory, Deirdre & Tara are always supportive of John at all events in Kilmacud Crokes and John’s granddaughter, Molly is continuing the proud tradition of her family’s involvement with the club as she plays on the U8’s team which makes John a proud grandfather and a worthy recipient of this award.
