Kathleen Mullins, RIP. A tribute.

LADIES Gaelic Football Association President Mícheál Naughton has led the tributes to much-loved Carlow official Kathleen Mullins, who has passed away.

Kathleen, a native of Ardattin, provided decades of service to Ladies Football at local, provincial and national levels.

Kathleen was married to another well-known Ladies Football stalwart and volunteer, Fran Mullins, and the pair worked tirelessly on behalf of the Association.

Kathleen was renowned as an excellent badminton player before Ladies Football became more prominent in her life.

As Fran and Kathleen’s children, Leah, Donna and Karen, became increasingly involved with Ladies Football in Carlow, so Kathleen’s interest in the sport grew.

A member of the Askea club, Kathleen was present for her first county board meeting in 1997, before she was elected PRO in 1998.

That was the beginning of a lengthy stint in administration, with Kathleen holding numerous key roles including Carlow President and Chairperson, and Delegate to Leinster and Central Council. As a Leinster LGFA official, Kathleen served as Assistant Treasurer between 2011 and 2014 and and Treasurer from 2015 to 2020.

LGFA President Mícheál Naughton reflected: “It is with great sadness and regret that we learn of the passing of Kathleen Mullins.

“Kathleen was extremely popular and hard-working – and provided invaluable service and dedication to the Ladies Gaelic Football Association at various levels.

“Kathleen and her husband, Fran, were a true double-act and acknowledged at local level last year with the Setanta Award at the Carlow Sport Star awards.

“Kathleen was extremely passionate about Ladies Gaelic Football and even though she was affected by ill-health in more recent times, she still retained a keen interest in our sport, having stepped back from administration at a direct level.

“On behalf of all of us at the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, I wish to extend our sympathies to Kathleen’s husband, Fran, and their children, Leah, Donna and Karen, at this very sad time. The LGFA also extends our sympathies to Kathleen’s wider family and circle of friends.”
