Kealy, Ní Shé and Dillon turn up the heat on Mackin in ZuCar Golden Boot race

ARMAGH star and 2020 TG4 Senior Players’ Player of the Year Aimee Mackin now has serious competition in the race to land the inaugural ZuCar Golden Boot award, which will be presented to the top scorer in the 2021 TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Football Championships.

Mackin’s 4-28 (40 points) is still the total to catch as we reach the concluding stages of the Championship, and her recent form earned the Shane O’Neills star The Croke Park/LGFA Player of the Month award for July.

But Mackin has players from Wicklow, Carlow and Westmeath hot on her heels in the overall top scorer race now.

Last weekend, Wicklow sharpshooter Marie Kealy moved into the second place in the standings, and her 0-34 is now just six points off Mackin’s tally.

And Kealy potentially has two more games left in the 2021 Championships to surpass Mackin, as Wicklow prepare for a TG4 All-Ireland Junior semi-final clash with Limerick on Saturday.

Carlow’s Cliodhna Ní Shé is now very much in contention too, with a haul of 6-14 (32 points) ahead of her county’s Junior semi-final against Antrim on Sunday.

Westmeath’s Sarah Dillon is in fourth place on 4-17 (29 points), and with a TG4 All-Ireland Intermediate Final against Wexford to look forward to on September 5. Dillon would have to produce something very special to win the ZuCar Golden boot from here, but the Milltown player has enjoyed an excellent season.

Kerry’s Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh is also on 29 points with a 3-20 haul, but the Kingdom’s season is over after they secured Senior Championship football again for 2020 after defeating Tipperary in last weekend’s relegation play-off.
