Well done to our mighty U14s who has reached their first U14 All Ireland Final since 1999. Kerry played into a stiff breeze in the first half and started the game very well. Three points in the opening ten minutes were scant reward for Kerry’s early dominance. Nicole O’Connor, Eilish Lynch and Meghan Buckley all took their scores well but Kerry’s tendency to overplay the ball in the forward line cost them on a number of occasions. Kerry maintained a 0-5 to 0-2 lead approaching half time with further points form Claire O’Sullivan and Meghan Buckley. Barbara Browne, who had a superb game at corner forward, surged up the field in injury time and found Kerry Captain Amy Fitzgerald on the edge of the square. The tall and elegant young forward, who just happens to be the legendary Maurice Fitzgerald’s niece, evaded her marker and shot past the advancing Amanda Budden in Cork’s goal to leave a half time scoreline of 1-5 to 0-2 in favour of Kerry. Kerry started the second half on top once more. Denis Healy made a superb tactical switch placing Megan O’Connell at full forward O’Connell added two quick points. This quickly changed however as Cork were awarded a dubious penalty which was dispatched to the back of the net by their captain Emily Phelan. They added to this score immediately with a point from Ciodhna Twohig and suddenly a dramatic comeback looked possible. Sometimes in adversity you find out more about your players than in times of strength. Goalkeeper Michelle O’Connor was the first to step up as she managed to make three superb saves to quell the rising rebel resistance. Then Ciara Murphy, who had been substituted at half time due to a mouth injury, bravely re entered the fray to inspire her colleagues in the frantic final few minutes. Leanne Mangan, Marie Quirke and fittingly Ciara Murphy added the final scores to secure a wonderful victory for the young Kerry side. On the basis of this performance they have every chance of going the whole way and defeating Galway in the final. This Kerry side have all the attributes worthy of being All Ireland champions and a victory at All Ireland level would be a tremendous boost to all involved in promoting Ladies football. in Kerry. Referee Derek Byrne of Limerick let the game flow and this contributed to a fast exciting game.
