Kerry U-14 Club Finals

It was County Final this weekend in Kerry as the Finals of Div 1,2,3, and 4 of the Garvey Group County were all down for decision and what a weekend it proved with many of the successful Kerry U/14 All Ireland team in action for their clubs.

In Div 1 Castleisland Desmonds took the title against Chorca Duibhne, Div 2 Kenmare overcame Rathmore. Div 3 Laune Rangers narrowly took the title against their neighbours Milltown Listry and Legion won the Div 4 honours against Spa. Many thanks to Garvey Group for sponsoring the competition and to all clubs who gave us use of the pitches for the finals.

Garvey Group U14 Div 1 Final.

Castleisland Desmonds 1-11 Chorca Duibhne 0-3.

Castleisland playing with a strong wind opened the scoring with a point from Aisling O Connell. Desmonds did kick some bad wides but responded well with a couple of good frees from Melissa Holland. Rebecca Kerin then scored a scorcher of a goal with a low shot after a super run through the centre as Aisling O’Connell cleared a ball from a Chorca Duibhne attack and passed to Kerin’s who dispatched it low to the net and raised the green flag. The girls from the west tried to convert from the few attacks but the Desmonds stood solid especially Ellen Brown at full back who gave her marker a torrid time and also Leanne O’Connor and the half back line of Maura Sheehan and captain Aoibhin O’Connoe who lead by example with a fine display of skills. 3 points from Niamh Walsh, Andrea Murphy and another from a free from Melissa Holland left Desmonds leading at half time 1-7 to 0-1. In the second half Aisling O Connell added another point and Melissa Holland one free and one from play. A courageous performance, full of skill and determination from the Desmonds girls that will stand to them as they represent Kerry in the national Feile in Cork on the weekend of July 2nd and each of their sister clubs in Kerry Ladies Football wish them well.

Best for Desmonds were Caitlinn Nolan, Eda Mangan, Tina Mangan, Maire Sheehan, Andrea Murphy, Shauna O Connor, and player of the match Aisling O Connell.

Garvey Group U14 Div 2 Final

Kenmare out point Rathmore

Kenmare 0-10 Rathmore 0-1

Kenmare finally pushed aside a battling Rathmore defence in this competitive Div 2 decider played at Glenflesk. Kenmare lead at the break 0-4 to 0-0 with the help of points from Chloe Hawker (2), Jane O’Sullivan and Clodagh Quinlan. However it was more due to the fact that both sets of defences were on top all through. Rathmore’s proved hard to break down with Shannon O’Leary, Marylyn O’Leary and Peggy Murphy repelling the Kenmare attack time and again. While Kenmares Orla Randles and Georgina Fitzpatrick were consistent in putting an end to Rathmore attacks at the other end.

Rathmore started the second half brightly and Karen Dinneen pointed in the 6th min to give them more encouragement but in truth Kenmare had too many stars on the day and ran out easy winners when they added on 5 points in the last 10 mins when the brave Rathmore defence could give no more. Kenmare captain Clodagh Quinlan accepted the cup on behalf of her team mates

Scorers: Kenmare Chloe Hawker 0-5, Jane O’Sullivan 0-3, Clodagh Quinlan 0-2 Rathmore Karen Dineen 0-1

Garvey Group U14 Div 3 Final

Laune Rangers 3-7 Milltown/Listry 2-6

Laune Rangers claimed the Garvey Group Division 3 U14 ladies title with a hard fought win over neighbours Milltown/Listry played at Beaufort on Friday evening last.

Laune Rangers settled the better in the first 15mins but found scores hard to get as the tough Milltown defence were hard to breach. Meave Johnston on the 6th min, Kathlynn Coffey on the 8th min and Noreta Callaghan on the 13th min pointed the way for the Rangers as they looked to take control. Miltowns pointed free from Aisling Murphy did little to turn the tide as Meave Johnston was finding a lot of space and tacked on another 2 points as the Killorglin gap widened to 4 points. Milltown rang in the changes in defence with Lisa Murphy coming to centre back to counteract the progress of Johnston and in the short term it worked as Jemma Teahan and the impressive Katie Dennehy began to get a hold on midfield. Aisling Murphy converted another Milltown chance before Samantha Roche saw her goal bound shot just dip wide. However Murphy made no mistake on the 24th min as she beat Sarah O’Connor to goal for Milltown to level the game. However as in a lot of games the next score is vital and Laune Rangers took 40 seconds to respond with a Muireann Arthurs goal after great work from Danika Grady and Meave Johnston. Laune Rangers took this lead to the break.

The Killorglin girls started the second half like the first and seemed to have put Milltown away by the 7th min when Meave Johnston hit the net following an Alanna Piggott point as now the advantage went to 7 points. However the Milltown girls again dug in deep and had reduced the deficit to 3 again by the 15th mins when Aisling Murphy pointed and a goal mouth scramble saw the ball cross the line in a scramble when any one of 3 players could have claimed the goal but it was Jessie griffin that was celebrating. Meave Johnston added another point to her impressive total and in the 18th Min Muireann Aurther goaled again to again steady the Laune Rangers ship as they pushed ahead 3-7 to 2-4 ahead with the finishing line is sight. The Milltown/Listry pride came to the fore again and with Courtney O’Donoghue winning more and more ball the Milltown attack went all out and 2 point blank saves by Sarah O’Connor held them at bay before Samantha Roche tapped over a pointed free and Katie Hogan raised the last white flag of the evening before Denis Sayers brought a truly entertaining game to a halt much to the delight of Laune Rangers and the heartbreak of Milltown. Stephen Gamble and Elaine Grandfield can be proud of the manner Laune Rangers played and had match winners in Sarah O’Connor, Eibhlis O’Connor, Danika O’Grady Meave Johnston and Muireann Arthurs While John O’Shea’s girls gave all they had with Courtney O’Donoghue, Katie Piggott, Katie Dennehy and Aisling Murphy giving their all. County Board Chairman Donal Barry presented the Cup the Meave Johnston of Laune Rangers.

Scorers: Laune Rangers Meave Johnston 1-4, Muireann Arthurs 2-0, Katlynn Coffey 0-1, Noreta Callaghan 0-1, Alanna Piggott 0-1,

Milltown/Listry Aisling Murphy 1-3, Jessie Griffin 1-0, Katie Hogan 0-2, Samantha Roche 0-1

Garvey Group U14 Division 4 Final

Legion too strong for Spa in East Kerry Derby

Legion 4-18 Spa 3-3.

This was never going to be easy for Spa as Killarney Legion came into the final in fine free scoring form but looked in with a chance at half time as they trailed 1-5 to 1-1 and the large crowd at Kilcummin looked as if they were in for a real battle in the second half, 3 quick Legion points early in the second half was again cancelled out by Spa’s Linda Bruggner but this was as close as it was going to get as Legion re-discovered their good early season form and ran out comfortable winners with Fiadhna Tagney scoring 2-6 in the last 20 minsutes.

Winning Captain Sophie Smith accepted the Cup on behalf of her team.

Scorers:

Legion: Fiadhna Tagney 2-6, Eileen Mahoney 1-5, Rebecca Murphy 1-2, Isabella Grundy 0-3

Spa Niamh Hickey 0-3 Saoirse Holland 1-0 Linda Bruggner 1-0 Tara Fitzpatrick 1-0
