Ladies Football Final Makes TG4 Top Irish TV Channel

The TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Football Finals have once again proven to be an audience winner. TG4 was the most popular channel in Ireland during its live coverage of the 2009 finals yesterday, with viewing share well ahead of its nearest challenger during the finals period.

The Senior Final between Cork and Dublin was watched by one in four television viewers in Ireland yesterday afternoon. It had an average of 169,000 viewers throughout the match, peaking at 230,000. This makes it TG4’s third most popular programme of 2009 to date, behind only the live coverage of the Allianz Hurling and Football finals and on a par with the AIB Club Football Final. Overall coverage of yesterday’s three ladies finals had a reach of 466,000 viewers (Source: AGB Nielsen Media Research, the official measure for tv audience in Ireland).

The finals were also once again broadcast live on www.tg4.tv TG4’s award winning broadband service. The webcast of this year’s finals drew thousands of viewers from all over the world, notably from Europe, Asia and North America.

Commenting on these viewing figures, TG4 Ceannasaí, Pól Ó Gallchóir, said that he was delighted at this latest confirmation of the continuing growth of TG4 audience. “Coming at the end of the first full week of our new Autumn 2009 schedule, these audience figures are very welcome and represent the most tangible measure of success for us,” he said. “High profile Irish sports events are always very popular with our audience and, given our dual role as competition sponsor and tv rights holder of the Ladies Football Championships, we are especially proud of yesterday’s achievement.”
