Last Gasp Carney Goal Sees Fermoy Through to Schools All-Ireland Final

A late late goal by Grace Carney was just about enough to see Fermoy through to the Pat the Baker Post Primary Schools Senior A Final.

With her side behind by two points, Carney struck with two minutes to go to break St Leo’s hearts and put Fermoy into the final and a chance to win their first All-Ireland title at this level.

The game started brightly, with Fermoy playing into a strong wind. A converted penalty by Sinead Walsh after Katie Hannon was brought down gave the Cork side the ideal start but Leo’s bounced back with two points from distance. A goal from Grace Carney and a long range point by Katie Hannon kept Fermoy in front half way through the first half.

Three quick points by Leo’s were cancelled out by another Sinead Walsh goal who dribbled soccer style through the Leo’s defence before chipping the advancing ‘keeper. St Leo’s responded with the goal of the game, a long range strike by Sinead Doogue which flew into the Fermoy net. This was followed by a point by the same player, leaving the scores 3-2 to 1-7 at half time to Fermoy and Leo’s facing into a strong breeze.

Leo’s tore into Fermoy and a goal and two quick points pushed Leo’s ahead. With 10 minutes left, Leo’s were four points up, but Fermoy crept back to level with three minutes to go. Leo’s responded to go two points ahead until Carney popped up with the match winner and more delight for Ladies Football in Cork.

St Leo’s will live to regret the three first half goals that left them trailing at the break and a mountain to climb. Fermoy will thank sharpshooter Careny for her last minute intervention to see them passed the fancied Carlow team.
