Garrycastle (Westmeath) v St. Brigid’s (Dublin)
1 – 4 2 – 11

St Brigit’s captain Elaine Kelly proudly lifted the Leinster Intermediate Club Championship cup on Sunday last, after her team had beaten Garrycastle in Geraldine Park, Athy.
On acceptance of the cup from Leinster Secretary Cathal Friel, Kelly acknowledged that the score board did not reflect the intensity of the game, St. Brigids had to battle hard through out the game, against a strong Westmeath side.
For the first quarter, both teams exchanged scores, Elaine Kelly tagging on a brace of points with just four minutes on the clock, however Garrycastles top scorer Sarah Dolan silenced the Brigids supporters when her dipping shot dropped under Ciara Lowery’s cross bar to put the Westmeath side ahead (1-0 to 0-2) for the first and only time in the game.
St Brigids cranked up the pressure on the Garrycastles backs, with Kelly firing over a further two points as the Dublin club side settled in to their stride, Aisling Kelly registered St. Brigids first goal in the twenty second minute to open a four point gap, Dolan replied with two points, which were cancelled out by Coleen Barrett and Noelle Healy.
With only four points separating the sides at the break (1-2 to 1-6), it was all to play for in the second period. Both teams battled hard to gain the upper hand, Sorcha Furlong open the gap to five (1-2 to 1-7), the turning point came in the forty second minute when Noelle Healy fired the ball to the back of Claire Gaffey’s goal to put St. Brigids in the driving seat, for the remainder of the game.
Katie Murphy, Sorcha Furlong, Noelle Healy and Elaine Kelly added a point a piece to clinch the game for the Dublin side. St. Brigids victorious captain Elaine Kelly stepped up to collect the Leinster Intermediate club championship cup and the Player of the match award from Leinster secretary Cathal Friel.
On behalf of the Leinster County Board, Cathal thanked all those involved on the day, in particular Athy GAA Club for the use of their excellent facilities at Geraldine Park.
