Greystones, Co. Wicklow

Saturday April 12th 2008

Half time score:
Wicklow 0 – 01 Meath 2 – 06

Full time score:
Wicklow 0 – 01 Meath 4 – 12

Meath Minors got off to the best possible start in the Leinster Quarter Final against Wicklow on Saturday.

Corner forward Tara Ryan opened the scoring in the 3rd minute with a well taken point. It was nip and tuck for the next six minutes with neither team taking any scores. Wicklow keeper Linda Dempsey was in superb form and made many point blank saves in the first half to keep the Meath forwards at bay.
It was eight minutes into the game before Meath put another score on the board courtesy of Shannon McDonagh who latched onto a lose ball to send it over the bar. Although the scoring was slow Meath were picking off any chances that came their way. The game really came to life when Shannon McDonagh and Hayley Lawton scored a goal apiece in the last two minutes of the half. Wicklow had only one score for the half which came from the full forward Loretta Gilbert. Meath went into the break comfortably ahead by 2 – 06 to a point.

Meath started the second half the way they finished the first with Aisling Doherty sending in an early goal. The Wicklow backs were under extreme pressure from the Meath forwards and try as they might they just couldn’t stem the flow of scores from the Royal girls. There were well taken points Stephanie Byrne (3) Lawton, McDonagh and Fiona O’Neill. It was a comfortable win for Meath, but next on the agenda is Dublin who accounted for Laois in one of the other quarter finals. This game will take place on Saturday April 26th at a venue tbc. Meath will want to exact some revenge for last years beating by Dublin at the same stage in the competition.

Meath team and scorers:
Orlagh McLoughlin, Alex Goodman, Claire Coffey, Sara Curran, Niamh O’Sullivan, Siobhan Sheridan, Aoife O’Rourke, Aedin Murray (1pt), Maire O’Shaughnessy, Hayley Lawton (1 – 03), Stephanie Byrne (4pts), Aisling Doherty (2g), Fiona O’Neill(1pt), Shannon McDonagh (1-02), Tara Ryan (1pt).

Elsewhere Meath u/14s travel to Laois for their 4th round tie. Meath head up this group and will be looking to consolidate their position. Laois are level with Dublin in second place.
The u/16s will be at home also to Laois. They will be looking for a win as at the moment they are on level pegging with the O’Moore County both teams having secured two wins.
