Mayo edge Roscommon in epic Connacht U14 clash

Roscommon 4-8 Mayo 4-9

(Report via Roscommon LGFA)

THE Roscommon U14 team suffered a one-point defeat to Mayo in Swinford on Monday evening – but the players can be proud of their performances and never-say-die attitude.

The spectators were treated to a very exciting and skilful game.

Roscommon were slow to get going in the first half with only one point to show after 20 minutes of play. Mayo were well on top and had a stiff breeze at  their backs. They had a number of wides but converted three points and  then blitzed Roscommon with two goals in quick succession.

Roscommon could only manage a further two points with Mayo tagging on two more as well before the half time break – Mayo 2-05 Roscommon 0-03.

A much hungrier Roscommon side came out in the second half, showing great teamwork, brilliant defending and some great attacking play.

This resulted in the lead being clawed back with a point from Aisling Feely and two from Aisling Hanly, followed by a well taken goal from corner forward Amy Doorey.

Another goal arrived soon after, from the boot of the talanted Aisling Hanly.

Roscommon had now levelled matters. Mayo then scored a goal which was quickly cancelled out by another sublime score from Aisling Hanly.

Roscommon then went ahead with a point from Hanley  but again  Mayo levelled  at the other end.

Roscommon’s fourth and final goal came when Aisling scored her hat trick  but once again Mayo went straight back up the pitch to score the equaliser , followed quickly by two more points to go two  ahead with just minutes remaining.

Roscommon tried their best to get the winning goal but Mayo defended well and Aisling Hanly converted a free to leave just one between the teams at the final whistle.

Roscommon’s next outing is away to Leitrim next Sunday at 12 noon, at a Leitrim venue (TBC).
