McGing and Courtney receive Player of the Month Awards

The final awards for 2012 were presented today at the Croke Park Hotel as Carnacon’s Michelle McGing and Donaghmoyne’s Cora Courtney were named as the Croke Park Hotel Players of the Month for November and December respectively.

Michelle McGing has been chosen as the November recipient of the Croke Park Hotel Player of the Month Award. Michelle gave a fantastic display in Carnacon’s victory over great rivals, Inch Rovers, from Cork. Michelle gave an all action display providing a link between defence and attack and working tirelessly to ensure that Carnacon emerged as winners by 14 points to 10. Mother of two, Michelle, has been a superb player for both club and county winning an All Star Award with Mayo in 2003.

Carnacon’s march to a second consecutive TESCO HomeGrown All Ireland Club title was halted at the final hurdle by Monaghan’s Donaghmoyne. In a fantastic game of football it was the December Croke Park Hotel Player of the Month Award winner, Cora Courtney, that was to the fore in Donaghmoyne’s victory. Cora’s display from midfield was inspirational as she covered every blade of grass in Ballinamore. Her attacking and defensive displays were a major factor in Donaghmoyne’s domination of possession and her influence on the game was summed up in her driving run as she contributed a point of her own as Donaghmoyne claimed the 2012 TESCO Homegrown All Ireland Club Title. It was a special day for the Courtney clan as Cora was joined on the winning team by sisters Fiona, Sharon and Joanne.

Speaking about the Croke Park Hotel Player of the Month Award winners LGFA CEO Helen O’Rourke said ‘Michelle and Cora have both had great years with their respective clubs and they have shone throughout a very entertaining and competitive club championship. Carnacon and Donaghmoyne are two of the top clubs in the country and are developing a very healthy rivalry in the club championship having met at the latter stages several times in recent years. With the new season looming large before us it is fitting that the last two awards of 2012 have been given to club players, it is the clubs that are the life blood of our game and I am already looking forward to this year’s competition.’
