Mixed Day for Cork in the TG4 Championship Quarter Finals 5-11 LONDON 0-9 On Sunday the Cork junior team progressed to the All-Ireland semi final when they defeated London. Despite a very strong wind Cork led at half time 3-5 0-5. London were very physical and were worthy of a position in the quarter final series of the TG4 junior championship. The visitors kept in toe throughout the majority of the first period but Cork hit a purple patch with minutes remaining in the first and goals from Ashling Barrett, Niamh Hickey and Siobhán Forde gave them the cushion the needed for the second half. A number of substitutions were made by Cork at half time as many of the girls were playing in the Evening Echo senior club championship the same evening. However it was London who shone in the opening minutes, notching four good points from play without a reply from the Rebels. Great play from Elaine O’Riordan, Cathriona Moran and Sile O’Callaghan saw Cork creep slowly away once again. Goals from subs Laura Harrington and Hanora Kelleher put the icing on the cake and the final score read 5-11 0-9. The Rebels’ now play Sligo in the All-Ireland semi final scheduled for September 12. A question mark hangs over this fixture however as the hurlers play the same day. Meanwhile the seniors lost to a very physical Mayo side in their semi final clash on Saturday in Tullamore. The Connaught champions started the better and finished the better, never really allowing Cork to get into their game. Cora Staunton once again caused problems and notched 8 points in total. The Munster champions were unlucky not to receive two penalties late in the game which could have meant a more favorable result. That aside Cork should be proud of their historic achievement in winning a first senior Munster title and making it to the Suzuki National League final – it’s only a matter of time before success blows our way at this level.
