Ulster Minor Championship: 29/07/03 Monaghan v Donegal Monaghan 2-18 Donegal 2-11 Monaghan booked a Ulster Minor Final spot with Cavan after overcoming a very spirited Donegal side at Scotstown. Donegal came to face the reigning champions without their regular net minder Denise McElhinney and also had to field minus their key player Danielle McDaid through injury. This was a wonderful match between two well-matched sides but in the end Monaghan had just that little more to come out on top. It was the home side that got off to a great start racing into a eight point advantage with some fine points from Slainey Murray and Helen Hughes in particular. Donegal opened their account in the 20th minutes with a goal from Emer O’Herlihy after a mistake from Maraid Kerr in defence. Donegal followed up with three points to close within two before Niamh Lynch struck for Monaghan’s first goal just before the break to go in ahead by 1-10 to 1-03. The second half produced much of the same with some great displays as the weather conditions worsened but the pitch to its credit held up perfectly. Donegal as much as they tried could not pull back their opponents with Slainey Murray and Niamh Lynch always able to get those important scores. Yvonne McMonagle and Sheila Campbell always looked dangerous they could not get any closer then six points with the game finishing up with goals apiece for Therese McNally and Sheila Campbell. Monaghan now go forward to meet Cavan in the final on August 7th.
