More than a Sporting Experience – the First Thirty Years of Gaelic Games in Luxembourg

This year, Gaelic Sports Club Luxembourg (GSCL) celebrates its thirtieth year.To mark the occasion, the Club is publishing a book with the above title. It runs to 144 pages lavishly illustrated with 32 pages in full colour. The book tells the Club’s story over the past three decades, the matches played, places of cultural significance visited, the evolution of the European hurling and Gaelic football leagues, and it captures the energy and competitiveness that goes into these sports.

Sport was always very special for the Irish; there are many references to the game of hurling in the mid-12th century Book of Leinster. A detailed survey of conversations in Ireland revealed that sport was the most popular topic of discussion in the country – far ahead of such subjects as the weather, politics and religion. It is not surprising that the first association founded by the Irish in Luxembourg was a Gaelic sports club.

The book also recounts the Irish presence in Luxembourg from the time Willibrord came to this area with a group of Irish some thirteen centuries ago, to the present day.

Last year, GSCL fielded four teams – camogie (Ladies’ version of hurling), Ladies' football, hurling and Gaelic football – and they have played at venues from Rennes to Munich, from Copenhagen to Barcelona.
Gaelic Games have secured a niche on the European Continent.
Luxembourg’s pivotal and entertaining role in achieving this is celebrated in the book which is generously supported by AIB Luxembourg.

This is the first history of a Gaelic Games club on the Continent, with all the proceeds going to the running of GSCL.

The history is now available at 15 euros a copy, payable to LU83 0021 2375 5690 0000
