Nuacht Uladh - Report on Trudi Kierans Tournament

NUACHT
ULADH – SUCCESS FOR DONEGAL AND DOWN IN TRUDI KIERANS
TOURNAMENT

The Trudi Kierans cup and shield tournament
for inter-county U16 teams was played in Truagh
on Saturday last. After two rounds of the
cup competition each of the four teams had
won a game each. Their third round robin games
then doubled as semi finals. In the first
of the semi’s Cavan led Donegal by a single
point at half time, however the Tir Chonnail
girls turned in an excellent second half performance
to win 3-5 to 2-1. The other semi final between
Monaghan and Tyrone finished level at full
time 2-6 each. Tyrone went on to win the tie
3-8 to 2-8 after extra time. In the second
half Natasha Ferris opened the scoring with
a point however when Antrim’s Clare Tomelty
found the net, the Down players started to
get a little edgy. Antrim’s corner forward
Cathy Keeley hit two lovely goals but when
a big performance was needed Kyla Treanor
delivered. The Down captain scored another
1-2 to give her side a single point win.

In
a close and exciting final Donegal beat Tyrone
2-3 to 1-5. Sarah Connolly scored all of Tyrone’s
scores while Donegal’s midfielder Karen Gutherie
hit 2-1 of her sides tally. The other points
were scored by Lisa Byrne and Michelle Mc
Dermott. After playing the round robin series
Antrim and Down qualified for the shield final.
The mourne girls went into the final as favorites
after winning the corresponding league game
by 15 points. The final was a totally different
game and in the end Down won by a single point
2-6 to 3-2. Down had a dream first half. Kyla
Treanor hit three points and Natasha Ferris
found the net to give them a half time lead
of 1-3 to 0-1.
