NUACHT ULADH – SUCCESS FOR DONEGAL AND DOWN IN TRUDI KIERANS TOURNAMENT The Trudi Kierans cup and shield tournament for inter-county U16 teams was played in Truagh on Saturday last. After two rounds of the cup competition each of the four teams had won a game each. Their third round robin games then doubled as semi finals. In the first of the semi’s Cavan led Donegal by a single point at half time, however the Tir Chonnail girls turned in an excellent second half performance to win 3-5 to 2-1. The other semi final between Monaghan and Tyrone finished level at full time 2-6 each. Tyrone went on to win the tie 3-8 to 2-8 after extra time. In the second half Natasha Ferris opened the scoring with a point however when Antrim’s Clare Tomelty found the net, the Down players started to get a little edgy. Antrim’s corner forward Cathy Keeley hit two lovely goals but when a big performance was needed Kyla Treanor delivered. The Down captain scored another 1-2 to give her side a single point win. In a close and exciting final Donegal beat Tyrone 2-3 to 1-5. Sarah Connolly scored all of Tyrone’s scores while Donegal’s midfielder Karen Gutherie hit 2-1 of her sides tally. The other points were scored by Lisa Byrne and Michelle Mc Dermott. After playing the round robin series Antrim and Down qualified for the shield final. The mourne girls went into the final as favorites after winning the corresponding league game by 15 points. The final was a totally different game and in the end Down won by a single point 2-6 to 3-2. Down had a dream first half. Kyla Treanor hit three points and Natasha Ferris found the net to give them a half time lead of 1-3 to 0-1. Share this Article 0 0
