O'Connor Cup Round 1 Round Up

 

The first round of the Ladies HEC O’Connor cup took place yesterday with some important points up for grabs in the race to Queen’s next month.

In Group A of the O’Connor Cup a strong University of Limerick team had a comprehensive win over University College Dublin on a scoreline of 3-11 to 0-05. Elsewhere, last year’s beaten finalists, Dublin City University were in devastating form as they enjoyed a comprehensive 5-14 to 0-03 win over NUI Galway in their first round meeting. goals coming from Sinead Greene, Siobhan Woods and a hattrick from Dublin star, Lyndsay Peat.

There was only one match in Group 2 but that match featured defending champions, Queen’s University Belfast, as they met University College Cork. These two side will be amongst the favourites for the overall title but, on this occasion, the spoils went to Queen’s on a 2-11 to 3-07 scoreline. Queen’s are now in a strong position to reach the finals weekend which they will be hosting but UCC will now need a win against IT Sligo and the result of the other match to go their way.

In the Giles Cup Trinity College Dublin and NUI Maynooth played out an entertaining encounter but it was the defending champions, Maynooth, that were victorious on a scoreline of 3-09 to 5-11. The other match in Group 1 paired University of Ulster Jordanstown against Mary Immaculate College Limerick but the two sides couldn’t be separated as they finished 1-09 to 2-06. Carlow Institute of Technology seized control of Group 2  thanks a dominant performance against Institute of Technology, Tralee resulting in a 6-14 to 2-06 victory.

The second round of action is due to take place on the weekend of February 26th.
