O’Currys/Kilkee and Kilmihil contested the quarter final of the Senior League last Sunday in a blustery but sunny Miltown Malbay. This pairing last met in the Intermediate League Final last year when the girls from the peninsula proved too strong for a gallant Kilmihil team. This was not to be Kilmihil’s day but they can take consolation from the fact that the gap between these sides has narrowed considerably.

O’Currys/Kilkee were first to get on the scoreboard with a point from county star Majella Griffin. Indeed she was to score 3 further pointes – 2 from frees – before Ailish Considine put over a free to open Kilmihil’s account. Sarah Cahill added a point for Kilmihil before Maria Kelly scored the first of her two goals to increase O’Currys/Kilkee’s lead. Una Downes replied with a point before Majella Griffin and Ailish Considine exchanged points from frees leaving the half time score 1.05 to 0.04 in favour of O’Curry/Kilkee.

On the resumption Majella Griffin pointed a free but Kilmihil upped the tempo and were rewarded with 2 points from Ailish Considine and goal from her sister Eimear leaving the sides level. Ailish Considine pointed another free giving Kilmihil a short lived lead. Grace Walsh and Maria Kelly both rattled the Kilmihil net with well taken goals. Kilmihil battled on and after a goal mouth scuffle Sarah Cahill landed the ball in the net leaving it all to play for with just a point between the teams. O’Curry’s/Kilkee showed their experience and ran at the Kilmihil defence who gave away 3 frees that were punished by Majella Griffin’s accurate free taking.

O’Currys/Kilkee now go on to play Miltown Malbay in the semi final.
