PAT THE BAKER ALL IRELAND U16 B AND U16C FINALS

U16C FINAL Ballinamore, Leitrim 1-4 St. Catherines, Armagh
2-4

Roared on by eleven bus loads of supporters St. Catherine’s Armagh
claimed the All Ireland U16C title at the expense of Ballinamore
Post Primary Scholl yesterday. As early as the second minute St.
Catherine’s had a great goal chance however Leitrim keeper Niamh
Mc Govern made a great save from Finnoula Rodgers. The Armagh
side made no mistake two minutes later when full forward Aoife
Lennon found herself one on one with the keeper and buried to
the net. The excellent Lennon then followed with two points, one
from a free to put her side five ahead entering the second quarter.
Ballinamore opened their account in the 18th minute when midfielder
Clare Plunkett fired a thirty five metre free goal ward. St. Catherine’s
keeper Terri Powell did manage to get a hand on it put unfortunately
for her she pushed it upwards and into the net. Ballinamore continued
to press and were rewarded with another point from Ciara Mc Loughlin
in the 28th minute which left the midway score 1-2 to 1-1 in favour
of St. Catherine’s. Both sides missed good goal chances early
in the second half before Emma Mullen pointed for St. Catherine’s.
Ballinamore refused to lie down and points from Sheila Walshe
and Claire Plunkett brought them level entering the final quarter.
A point from a free by Claire Plunkett in the 47th minute put
Ballinamore ahead for the first time. Aoife Lennon was then denied
by the woodwork before Tanya Mc Coy fired over to level matters
once again. The winning score, a goal then arrived with just three
minutes remaining.

U16B FINAL Dunmore Community College, Galway 6-7 Loreto Grammar,
Omagh 1-6

Dunmore’s ability to score goals was the main reason for their
success over Loreto Omagh in the U16B decider. The Galway side
had a dream start going ahead by sixteen points before Loreto
opened their account. Aine Hannon pointed after six minutes while
two minutes later Lucy Hannon netted a penalty after Helena Cummins
was hauled down. Nicola Kilgarriff then pointed before Hannon
added her second major of the day. Cummins then found the net
herself and after midfielder Clare Gannon sent over Sarah Burke
hit her sides fourth goal. In the 18th minute Omagh scored their
first point through Terri Mc Cusker. The next score of the game
didn’t arrive until the 29th minute when Omagh centre back Naomi
Mc Anulla surged through to send over and leave the half time
score 4-3 to 0-2 in favour of Dunmore. Omagh where much improved
in the second half however the gap was always too big to close.
Nicola Quinn and Naomi Mc Anulla exchanged points early on. Omagh
were then thrown a life line when Patricia Morris’s high looping
shot ended up in the net however Dumore responded with the brilliant
Lucy Hannon scoring her hatrick minutes later. Hannon then scored
goal number four from the penalty spot. Omagh did finish with
a flourish. Terri Mc Cusker (2) and Aisling Donaghy fired over
but it was much too little too late and Dunmore deservedly lifted
the crown.
