Irish Independent/Lucozade Sport Player of the Month for August – Sinéad Aherne The Irish Independent/Lucozade Sport Ladies Football player of the Month award for August goes to Sinéad Aherne of Dublin. Sinéads form in the forward line during Dublins TG4 Ladies Senior Championship quarterfinal victory over Tyrone made her an obvious choice for the August accolade. Full forward Aherne clocked up five points against the Ulster side, to ensure Dublins place in the semi-finals. However, despite scoring four points against Galway on Sunday, she was powerless to stop the All-Ireland champions comprehensively outplaying Dublin in the semi-final. I was pleased with my game and we played very well against Tyrone and they were tough opponents, she said. To get to another semi-final was a big achievement for us and it showed how we have gelled as a team. We have a great bunch of players to choose from and players like Louise Kidd and Avril Cluxton have done really well this year. Weve had some changes too and Niamh McEvoy has been doing really well since she moved to midfield. Nineteen-year-old Sinéad is studying for a business degree in Dublin, so shes living in the family home in Malahide. Living in Malahide means that Sinéad is near to her St. Sylvesters club, where she is enjoying new challenges at intermediate level. Im still enjoying my club football and I could be training every night if I wanted to. We won the Junior County Championship last year and weve moved up to intermediate now so our aim is to stay up this year, said Sinéad. The Aherne family have a huge interest in the clubs success as younger sister Fiona is also a footballer and plays on the club team. Sinéad Aherne joins some of the best of Ladies Football as she wins the Irish Independent/Lucozade Sport Award for August. Previous recipients in 2005 include Monaghans Niamh Kindlon, Aoibheann Daly from Galway, Longfords Sharon Treacy, Cork star Valerie Mulcahy, Wexfords Leona Tector and fellow Dubliner Louise Kelly.
