The Aisling McGing Memorial Cup is back on Leeside for the third year in a row as the Rebelettes overwhelmed the Jackies at Thurles on Saturday last. Despite a bright start by the Jackies which produced two points in the first four minutes from Teresa Molohan and Helen Cliffe the signs were ominous as Cork took a hold on midfield and drove forward at every opportunity. The combination play of Jenny Luddy, Grace Kearney and Katie Sheehan had the Dublin defence under pressure from early on in the game. Two great saves by goalkeeper, Deirdre Kelleher, between the seventh and eight minutes where she turned away a powerful effort on goal from Kearney and a flick from Sheehan at the expense of 45’s, kept the Jackies in the game. Add to this that Sheehan kicked a point when a goal looked on and a rout looked on the cards. Cork also kicked three poor wides during the first half. Cork’s early points came from Kearney and Sheehan with two. Dublin battled away and had a good patch between the fifteenth and twenty-fifth minutes where pressure was exerted on the Cork defence. S. Denvir kicked a point and Cliffe had a shot saved by Cork goalkeeper, Martina O’Brien. Two poor wides were recorded during this spell of pressure and Denvir had a shot on goal deflected away for a 45. But that was as good as it got for the Jackies. Cork looked far more dangerous when they went on the attack and Kelleher was again forced into turning away a Luddy goal-bound effort for a 45. In the twenty-ninth minute she could do nothing to stop a bullet of a shot from Luddy which was followed by a point from Sheehan. Cork led at the interval by 1-4 to 0-3 having played against the strong breeze in the first half. One feared for the outcome of the second half. Cork went on the attack from the start of the second half and gradually built up a head of steam. Four points in a row followed before Sheehan rocked the back of the net with a blistering effort. Dublin got their second wind briefly and had a few efforts on goal but these were dealt with comfortably. The Rebelettes weren’t finished yet and added another 1-2, the goal being a tap in after Kelleher had knocked another goal-bound effort out from under the crossbar and Gráinne Lucey was on hand to finish. In the league section of the competition Dublin came back from eleven points to force a draw but there was no danger of anything close to a repeat this time around. Cork were well deserving winners having once again kept the best wine ’til last. Theresa McGing, mother of the late Aisling, presented the Cup to Cork captain, Verona Ni Dhrisceoil. TG4 were no doubt delighted to hear an acceptance speech being delivered with great gusto by Verona and as Gaeilge.
