Sligo Shoot Down Kildare

Kildare went into this match desperately seeking  points on the board after losses in the opening four rounds of the League.They were down a few key players leaving them  a tough battle on their hands.

Sligo narrowly missed an early goal chance in the first minute of the game as Sarah McMoreland hit the crossbar but Kildare were quick to grab the rebound and clear the ball out of the danger zone. Sligo came charging back at Kildare and managed to get their first score in the game coming from a point from Sarah Reynolds. Kildare soon levelled with a beautiful point from Ellen Dowling. It was in the 8th minute when Sligo started to pull away from Kildare when Sarah McMoreland barrelled through the Kildare defenders and found the back of the net. With smart defending Sligo managed to keep Kildare away from their goal leaving them with the only option of going for a point and that is exactly what Ellen Dowling did. Sligo at one point were 6 points ahead of Kildare in the first half but Kildare fought back and went into halftime trailing 0-7 to 2-5.

 

For a short while, there was a glimmer of hope that Kildare might come from behind and come out on top after Ellen Dowling put them on the scoreboard first in the second half. Unfortunately that was short lived as Sligo scored four points before Kildare could respond in the 41st minute of the second half when Róisín Byrne put the ball over the bar for a point. Ciara Gorman then started off what was to be a landslide of scores for Sligo as they got seven consecutive scores, one of which was a goal. In the dying minutes of the game Kildare were awarded a free from close range. Róisín Byrne stood up to the mark and fired it into the back of the net. Unfortunately it was not going to be enough for Kildare and Sligo came out winners in this clash. Full time score Kildare 1-10 Sligo 4-16.
