St Louis do the three in a row

ALL IRELAND U19 SCHOOLS FINAL

St. Louis, Monaghan 4-8 St. Leo’s, Carlow 2-6

St. Louis Monaghan retained their All Ireland U19A crown yesterday
with an eight point win over Leinster champions St. Leo’s. This
is their third consecutive title and the foundation for victory
was laid in the first half when they struck three brilliant goals.
The ‘Louis’ were quick of the mark with Ciara Connolly firing
over on their first attack. This was followed by a point from
Catherine West before St. Leo’s opened their account through Sinead
Doogue. St. Louis then dominated the next five minutes hitting
1-3 without reply. Ciara Mc Anespie, Catriona Treanor and Ciara
Connolly sent over and the lively Catherine West found the net
giving Leo’s keeper Sinead Brennan no chance with her bullet shot.

Leo’s did respond with a point from full forward Deirdre O Shea
but this was quickly forgot about as Alana Hackett scored the Louis’s
second goal after great work by Ciara Mc Anespie. Captain Grainne
Mc Nally then fired over and with twenty minutes gone there was
a real let off for the Carlow side as Ciara Connolly hit the post.
Leo’s to their credit raided forwarded and were rewarded with a
point from Sinead Lyons and a super goal from Christine Scully.
The champions however finished the half strongly. Alana Hackett
hit the crossbar and then with their next attack player of the match
Charlotte Brady fired over. With just a minute left in the half
Ciara Mc Anespie who had been a constant thorn in St. Leo’s side
all afternoon finished a great move with a well taken goal. Directly
from the kick out Ciara’s sister Aoife received a yellow card and
a sin binning. Despite this the champions went in at the break happy
to be ahead 3-7 to 1-3.

St. Leo’s piled on the pressure from the start of the second half
throw in but found a St. Louis defence in excellent form. While
down to fourteen players the Farney school only conceded a single
score, a point from a free by Sinead Doogue. Kylie Murphy added
another point in the twelth minute but once again ‘The Louis’ responded,
this time with a goal. Ciara Mc Anespie sent a high speculative
ball goal ward, the ‘Leo’s’ keeper failed to hold on to it and Catherine
West pounced to send to the net for her second major and her sides
fourth. Scores were hard to come by in the final quarter. Charlotte
Brady hit a nice point with ten minutes left. St. Leo’s tried hard
to get back on terms but kicked a series of wides. Kylie Murphy
did manage to send over and the quick thinking Dierdre O Shea found
the net with a 13 metre free but it was too little too late and
St. Louis deservedly retained their title.
