St Mary's Macroom 6-13 Loreto Fermoy 1-07

Post Primary Schools Football St Mary’s Macroom 6-13 Loreto Fermoy 1-07 By Fr.Liam Kelleher

Football can be a funny old game, down one week up the next or vice versa. St Mary’s Macroom experienced both in the space of a week, Having been in, with a right good chance last week of capturing their first Munster Senior title trailing by just 2 points after playing against a near gale force wind against title holders Colaiste na Sceillige, they collapsed in the 2nd half and suffered a 25 point drubbing. A week later with over half the same starting 15 they did the reverse.

They struggled big time against Loreto Fermoy and were fortunate enough to be ahead at the break but were firing on all cylinders after the break to fly home with a 22 point advantage. Anything but a comprehensive win would have been a major shock although Loreto Fermoy who caused a shock, the previous week by defeating a fancied Beara Community School have been concentrating on camogie but showed that they have some fine footballers. Great credit is due to coach Ger Holland.

Perusing through the team sheet one could not be but impressed with the Macroom line up with 11 all-Ireland medal winners with Cork under 14 and 16 teams and with 2 more who have made this years under 14 panel. Loreto on the other hand had just 3 players on the same bracket . To Loretto’s eternal credit they carried the game to their opponents and gave as good as they got in the opening period. Macroom opened with a rather fortuitous goal from Katie Lynch, who was a constant thorn in the side for Loretto, she also fired over 3 excellent points, while will of the wisp Briege Corkery added 2 more, with diminutive Nolle Corkery bringing their total to 1-07 at the short whistle.

The Fermoy girls had a star in Marie O’Neill and she like Briege showed why she is a current Cork senior by accounting for 3 of the points with another coming from her sister Helena with the 5th coming from another Cork star Noreen O’ Farrell

Worried.

The Macroom mentors Gerald Healy and Patrick Lyne were clearly worried at the break, but whatever they said to their charges, had the desired effect and it was virtually all one way traffic. The clear difference was that Macroom had a much more balanced team and they exploited every weakness in the Loreto defence. Loreto on the other hand were too dependent on Marie O’Neill, Noreen O’Farrell Laura Cronin Sarah blackburn, Ciara Lynch and Mairead Finn and the sheer sustained pace of the Mid Cork girls wore them down.

Macroom added 5 goals and hit the woodwork on three occasions and added 7 points as well. Fermoy did get 3 points from frees form Marie O’Neill and a consolation goal from sub Niamh Molan. Macroom were clearly overjoyed a their first success at this level and the day proved the impact of Cork teams at underage level and who are now making a huge impact on the colleges scene. Pity was there were so few parents and spectators they would have been very impressed with the standard of play.

It was also a privilege to watch 2 of the finest footballers in the country who were on view, good friends on opposite sides Breige Corkery and Marie O’Neill. Provided they do not get over taxed, with both brilliant at camogie as well, they will be household names in the not too distant future, High praise no doubt, but you could not meet 2 nicer or more committed girls.

Next week Macroom play the Leinster Champions and few would bet against them on the form they displayed. Dave Daly handled the game very well and was excellent in allowing the advantage rule.
