DUBLIN’S St Maurs booked their place in the All-Ireland ladies junior club football final after finally getting the better of Monaghan outfit Latton on Saturday afternoon, in another nail-biting encounter that required extra-time to separate the sides.

Just like the drawn game, both teams were evenly matched but inspired by Olivia Leonard and Niamh Carthy, who between them contributed 13 points, St Maurs finally pulled clear in the second period of extra-time.

The sides were level at half-time, 1-5 apiece, with Aine Pyne for the visitors and Eileen Conlan for the home side finding the net.

Latton had a glorious chance on 27 minutes to take a real advantage, however, but Joanne Culleton drove her penalty wide.

Although Latton struck first on the resumption, St Maurs responded with five unanswered points in the third quarter, Leonard and Carthy very much to the fore, to move four points clear.

Latton though showed great character to fight back with Katie Duffy (free) and then a goal from Shannon Conlan on 52 minutes sending it to extra time – Latton 2-7 St Maurs 1-10.

Both sides hit a point a piece in the first period to still leave it level entering the final ten minutes.

It was then that the class of midfielder Leonard really shone through as she brought her personal tally to six points, all from play, while Carthy hit two frees to seal the victory and a meeting with Kinsale in next Saturday’s final in Carlow.
