Ladies secure second win in Special League

Stabannon Ladies, under the guidance of Sinead
Mulligan, saw off the challenge of neighbours
St. Kevins in the second round of the Special
League on Sunday last in Philipstown, giving Stabannon
their second win in this League.

Stabannon Ladies got off to a great start with
a point from Claire Lynch and with Mary Maloney
and Kim Lynch dominating midfield Stabannon maintained
possession for the majority of the first half.
However, in spite of maintaining possession Stabannon
failed to convert the scores, only scoring a total
of three points in the first half. Great defending
by Stabannon full back Andrea Carney and half
back Ann Marie Lynch kept the Kevins forwards
at bay for the first half and leaving the score
at three points to no score at half time in favour
of Stabannon.

Stabannon were unlucky to loose Laura McCartney
from the full forward line in the first half due
to injury and Laura was replaced by Teresa Hanratty.
St. Kevins came out strong in the second half,
making a few positional changes, switching Susan
Conlon to midfield and Ann Marie King to full
forward. Stabannon held firm and got off again
to a scoring start with a great point from Jenny
McGuinness. St. Kevins responded with a point
from a free and seemed to be edging their way
back into the game as Stabannon again failed to
convert the possession held by the forwards. A
point from Stabannons Siobhan Giggins put the
green and gold further ahead. It wasn’t long until
St. Kevins responded with a point and followed
this with a point from a free. Ruth McGuinness
replaced Siobhan Giggins in the full forward line.
Claire Lynch from Stabannon again converted leaving
the final score 6 points to 3 points in favour
of Stabannon.

Very tight defending by Stabannon full back and
half back line and by goalie Catriona McKeown
ensured that the Kevins forwards were unable to
convert scores easily. This is one win Stabannon
will cherish as it is their first time in two
years to beat St. Kevins at senior level. Best
for Stabannon were Ann Marie Lynch, Jenny McGuinness,
Deirdre Lynch and Mary Maloney. However, both
the team and management of Stabannon know that
there is some work to be done over the coming
weeks and before their next game on April 3rd
against Cooley in Stabannon.
