TESCO Homegrown All Ireland Club Semi Finals

2014 TESCO HomeGrown All-Ireland Ladies Football Club Sevens Finals

The TESCO Homegrown All Ireland Club Semi Finals take place this weekend with action in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior categories.

The TESCO Homegrown Senior Club Championship has been blown wide open with the defeat of the defending champions, Carnacon and the 2012 champions, Donaghmoyne by Kilkerrin Clonberne and Termon repectively. That means that there will be a new name on the trophy as none of the four remaining clubs have ever won before.

This Sunday, in Galway, there will be a battle of the giant killers as Kilkerrin Clonberne and Termon meet in the semi final. The Galway club are full of young talent like rising stars, Nicola and Louise Ward along with Louise Divilly, all of whom are established Galway senior stars despite still playing minor football. However, there is a core group of experience helping to bring the youngsters through including 2 time All Star Annette Clarke. Termon have been knocking on the door of provincial glory for several years but found Donaghmoyne of Monaghan too tough a nut to crack until this year when they finally claimed the Ulster title. There is no doubt that the bulk of their hopes will rest on the shoulders of Geraldine McLaughlin who lead the way in the Ulster final finishing with a personal tally of 4-04 from 4-07, on her day McLaughlin is one of the best players in the country.

Mourneabbey of Cork claimed the Munster Championship after defeating a strong Banner team and easily disposed of a very strong Parnell’s team in their quarter final to reach this stage. This Mournabbey side is backboned by the O’Sullivan sisters who are pivotal to their success. Ciara O’Sullivan recently received her second All Star award for her outstanding displays for Cork this season and her sister, Doireann is a huge presence since she shook off her long standing injury problems and the team is captained by the third of the sisters, Roisin who is also a member of the All Ireland winning Cork panel along with goalkeeper, Meabh O’Sullivan, it is also worth keeping an eye out for Máire O’Callaghan who has been outstanding in midfield for the Munster Champions.

Of the four clubs remaining in the hunt for the senior All Ireland club championship it is probably Sarsfields from Laois that are the most ecperienced having reached this stage last year and retaining their Leinster title at the expense of Na Fianna of Dublin. This is a team that work extremely hard as a unit but in 4 time All Star, Tracey Lawlor, they have one of the greatest players of the modern era amongst their ranks. Clare Conlon was the story of the Provincial championships as she made a dash from her FAI cup winning Raheny team in the Aviva to represent Sarsfields on the same day, this time there is no need for Clare to rush between fixtures as she fully concentrated on playing for the mountmellick club from the first whistle.

In the TESCO Homegrown Intermediate championship Monaghan Harps and Four Masters of Donegal will meet on Friday evening to decide who will go forward to face Clonbur of Galway on Sunday in the All Ireland semi final. Four Masters appeal against the original result was upheld at a central council meeting on Wednesday night necessitating the replay where extra time will be used if needed. In the other semi final Kerry’s Castleisland Desmond’s will take on Kilmacud Crokes  to decide who will advance to the final.

The TESCO Homegrown Junior Finals will also take place this weekend with Dee Rangers of Meath travelling to Limerick where they will meet Murroe Boher in their semi final whilst St. Ciaran’s of Roscommon make the trip to Tyrone where they will meet St. Dympna’s Dromore.
