TG4 Ladies Ulster Senior Championship The first of the three rounds of the Ladies Ulster Championship got under way at Saval on Saturday when Down played Armagh. Down face a difficult task in this championship as key players Lisa Morgan, Clara Fitzpatrick, Chara Laverty and Ciara OHiggins are all out due to injury. Armagh started strongly and took an early lead. Down’s full back line Hannah Murray, Niamh Canavan and Ciara McArdle stood up well to the Armagh pressure. Up front Micheala Downey was playing strongly and kept the Mourne Ladies in touch with long range points. At times Armagh stretched the Down defence and goalie Katie Farrell put in a superb performance blocking and clearing Armagh efforts on goal. Down’s Natasha Lennon lobbed over a point and Armagh’s lead was further reduced when Grainne McClean pointed from a free. Niamh McGowan, Emma Mulhern and Sinead Fegan all worked hard on the half back line while Captain Kyla Trainor won good possession at mid-field and drove forward setting up numerous Down attacks. Aine Hardy played her part in the central zone where possession broke evens for both teams. Mid-way through this half Armagh’s Mags McAlinden broke through the down defence and gave Katie Farrell no chance when she netted from close range. Half time score Down 0-6 Armagh 1-8 On the resumption Down started off brightly with Kate McKay, Orla Fegan and Kerryaine Magee coming more into the game and getting good possession. Armagh stretched their lead with more point efforts. The Down ladies responded with Michaela Downey firing over three more points to bring her tally to seven. Eimear Kane finished off a good Down move with a well struck point to narrow the gap to four points. Substitutes Eimear Kane, Laura Sharvin, Louise Kelly, Colleen Magee and Kiara Turley all tried hard but a late goal in the closing minutes wrapped up victory for the Orchard girls.
