Third Time Lucky For Kilmihil Ladies!

Third Time Lucky For Kilmihil Ladies!

Kilmihil: 8.11 Shannon Gaels: 3.06

Kilmihil and near neighbours, Shannon Gaels contested the Intermediate Football Final in Cooraclare on Saturday last. Kilmihil went it to this game as hot favourites having contested the intermediate finals in the two previous years, being narrowly beaten on both occasions. But Kilmihil were not going to be deprived this year and went in to this final with a hunger for victory. In a keenly contested and somewhat physical game Kilmihil stood up to everything that was thrown at them and just had too much in the tank for a gamely Shannon Gaels team.

Kilmihil had the ideal start with 2.02 on the board from 2 frees from Ailish Considine, and goals from Denise O’Halloran and Mairead Nugent. Shannon Gaels had the next three scores with two points from Rachel Ryan and a Mairead Madigan goal leaving just 3 points between the teams. Kilmihil were not phased by these scores and picked up the pace scoring 1.06 without reply with points from Sarah Cahill, Denise O’Halloran, Mairead Nugent and player of the match Ailish Considine accounting for 1.02 in this period. Shannon Gaels had the last point of the first half leaving the score 3.07 to 2.03 in favour of Kilmihil.
The Gaels had a determined restart but a goal from Ailish Considine followed by points from Sarah Cahill and Joan O’Halloran stretched Kilmihil’s lead. Mairead Madigan popped over a point for Shannon Gaels but the Gaels were struck a lethal blow when a speculative ball from Colette Downes ended up in the Shannon Gaels net. This was followed by a string of goals from Denise O’Halloran, Mairead Nugent & Una Downes. Shannon Gaels managed just a goal and two points in this period.

Kilmihil’s young goal keeper, Edel McMahon was solid and confident between the posts and she was ably assisted by a great full back line of Colette Downes, Yvonne Downes and Linda Russell. The half back line of Miriam Frawley, Elaine O’Halloran and captain, Fiona O’Neill were superb and gave very little change to the Shannon Gaels forwards. Kilmihil’s midfield duo of county star Una Downes and Dympna Walsh were magnificent all through. The half forward line of Mairead Nugent, Sarah Cahill and Joan O’Halloran all accounted well for themselves as did the full forward line of Eimear Considine, Denise O’Halloran and Ailish Considine. Sharon O’Gorman, Rosie Currane, Edel Conway and Paula O’Shea and all did well for Kilmihil when introduced.

Chairperson of the Clare Ladies Football Board, Johnny Hayes, presented the Player of the Match trophy to Ailish Considine before he presented the Intermediate cup to a jubilant Kilmihil captain, Fiona O’Neill. Kilmihil will now go on to represent Clare in the Muster Junior Club competition and will now be upgraded for the first time to the ranks of senior football.
