Tipperary Ladies Football Association are attempting to break the World Record for the ‘Largest Football Mosaic’ this weekend at Moyle Rovers GAA Grounds in Clonmel on Saturday, July 6th at 12pm. The world record attempt has the dual aim of promoting the sport in Tipperary and raising funds towards the continued development of Ladies Football within the county. Local engineer, Will McGarry, has designed the mosaic that is to be used, he painstakingly measured the diameter of each football and he has designed the mosaic in the shape of the words ‘The Horse and Jockey,’ a local hotel who are the team sponsor for the Tipperary Intermediate Ladies Team. The final design will be 20 metres wide and 3.3 metres high covering 67 metres². The completed design will consist of 1500 footballs in Tipperary’s famous blue and gold colours. Assistant Tipperary Ladies Football PRO, Michelle Donnelly said ‘We are very much looking forward to Saturday. As the mosaic is being constructed by the club members within Tipperary there will also be a blitz for local clubs taking place at the same time for more than 200 children making this a great family occasion. Our Tipperary team will also be there to meet with local children and take part in other fun activities. Supporters of Tipperary Ladies Football will also be invited to place a football in the mosaic therefore becoming part of history and being a record breaker. It really will be a great day for all involved.’ The current record (current as at the date of this letter) is: The largest football mosaic measured 9.75 m (32 ft) in length and 5.94 m (19.5 ft) in width giving a total area of 57.92 m² (624 ft²) and was achieved by BMO Bank of Montreal (Canada) at Yonge-Dundas Square, Toronto, Canada, on 5 July 2012.
