Donegal’s Denise Dunnion has won Jeromne Quinn’s ‘Score of the Year’ in Ladies Gaelic Football for a superb point taken from an acute angle in the New York Senior Final. Originally from Four Masters and a sister of the current Donegal Chairman Sean Dunnion, Denise has been a leading player in the Big Apple for a decade. The right-corner-forward curled her score over the bar from wide on the left and scored a total of 1-3 in Kerry/Donegal’s first ever New York title success. Fermanagh All Star nominee Marcella Monahan was voted into second place for her unstoppable shot to the top corner of the Waterford net in the TG4 All Ireland Intermediate Championship at St Peregrine’s in Dublin. With her team trailing by three points in the second-half, the half-back from Newtownbutler raced forward and fired a brilliant goal that proved to be a turning point in the game and in Fermanagh’s season. There had to be a Cork girl in the Top three though not many would have expected it to be Linda Barrett for scoring a terrific team goal for Queensland in the Australasia Final in Melbourne. From Mallow, Linda played for the Rebel county before transferring to the East Celts in Brisbane. The midfielder was involved twice in the well-worked move against New South Wales, linking play and then firing to the net. Jerome points out that these ‘Best Scores’ are only from games that he filmed in 2014, but still, the fact that two of the Top Three ‘Best Scores’ are from outside Ireland is further proof that both the standard of play and the numbers involved in Ladies Gaelic Football are rising rapidly every year. Furthermore, there was another contender from the Asian Finals where Ladies footballers outnumbered men taking part for the first time, and where a thrilling Ladies Final was given top billing on Finals Day.
