30 January 2013 Tyrone confirm squad for TESCO HomeGrown NFL Share this Article 0 0 0 Shares! 0 Shares! Tyrone will open their Tesco Homegrown national league campaign on Sunday with a trip to Mayo. The test says new manager Mickey Rea will be to see just how far Tyrone have come since a heavy championship loss to Mayo last Summer or perhaps how far they need to go as they step out into a new league campaign. Still in division one, Tyrone’s new manager has made changes both on and off the park, the hope is that Tyrone will challenge for honours again and indeed reach the dizzy heights of 2010 when they secured a place in the all Ireland final. This year admits the manager is about transition, some of the better known players are no longer around but take nothing away from the new look squad, “There’s an abundance of quality here” says the Derrytresk man. In terms of the squad veteran forward Gemma Begley has been handed the captains armband for 2013, a quality forward but a good leader too Begley will be joined in the forwards by plenty of talented score getters, vice captain Cathy Donnelly, the impressive Dearbla McCallan and Lycrecia Quinn are among the thirty one named by the management team in preparation for the national league. Theres still a sping in the step of Catriona McGahan, Maura McMenamin and Orla O’Neill while Clodagh Poyntz and Joline Donnelly are relishing the new season, hungry for success. Errigal Ciarans Shannon Quinn returns fully fit after a nasty hand injury required surgery as does St Enda’s Christiane Hunter who battled back from knee surgery last Spring to come off the bench against Mayo in the championship, minors from 2012 also feature Omagh’s Emma Collins goalkeeper Leah Lynch from Castlederg and Faoiltiarna Keenan from Killeshill all form a new look Tyrone squad that also features some returning players including Poyntz, Naomi McAnulla and Ashling O’Kane. Lynda Donnelly and Eimear Teague have announced inter county retirements, Sarah Connolly is travelling, Sarah Donnelly remains out injured while Neamh Woods didn’t make herself available. A new era beckons for Tyrone ladies football but they face a stern test in this highly competitive division one campaign.
