ULSTER U14 BLITZ COMPETITION Peter Canavan’s daughter Aine showed she is a chip of the old block as she notched 1-1 in the final of the Ulster U14 blitz yesterday. Tyrone won the A competition, beating Cavan in the decider 1-4 to 2-0. The Red Hand girls had to come from behind to secure the title. Cavan had a dream start when midfielder Jenny O Rourke made a driving run up the centre and blasted a shot which Tyrone keeper Grainne Mc Grade failed to hold and had to watch agonisingly as the ball rolled over the line. There was further disappointment for Tyrone as Breffni forward Ciara Moore was to find the net for the second time midway through the half. Tyrone midfielder Nicola Rafferty opened their account with a nice point and then on the stroke of half time the lively Canavan popped up to fire a looping shot over the head of Cavan keeper Aoife Fitzpatrick. In the second half Tyrone where like a new team. Emma Jane Girvan fired over a free early on and then Aine Canavan drew the sides level with a lovely point. Midfielder Rafferty then hit the winner with five minutes to go. In truth Tyrone deserved their win and the score would have been much greater but for an excellent display by the Cavan full back Laura Clarke. In total nineteen games were played at the excellent Greencastle grounds. After the first round, the ten teams from six counties were split into three grades of competition. The B competition saw Down, Armagh and Fermanagh all finish level. Each team were then asked to take five frees each from the twenty meter line and it was Armagh and Down who progressed to the final. The Mourne girls had a couple of points to spare in a close and exciting final. The C competition was played for between counties which provided two teams. Once again the games were all close and it was Monaghan and Tyrone’s second strings which met in the final. The Oriel girls trailed at the break 0-2 to 0-1 but went on to win 1-3 to 0-4, Caoimhe Moen scoring the all important goal. Paul Swift – Ulster PRO (pswift5@eircom.net) Share this Article 0 0
