Under 15 Division 2 League Final Venue: Ballykelly Date: Saturday 31 October 2009, Time 2pm Celbridge 3 – 9 Suncroft 3 – 5 Score at Half Time: Celbridge 1 – 4 Suncroft 0 – 4 That Celbridge won this game owed much to their overall scoring power. Suncroft relied on just 3 players for all their scores and indeed 3 goal Ellen Dowling might well have won most games but all of their front 8, both midfielders and all 6 forwards scored for a well balanced Celbridge team who having gone behind to the game’s first point had built up a 5 point lead when Sinead Cummins drove in the first goal after 25 minutes. A point each Emma Jane Vaughan and Ellen Dowling trimmed the lead before the break. On the resumption Leah Earley and Aisling O’Halloran each pointed for Celbridge only for Ellen Dowling to reply to both with brilliant goals, both driven home, left footed from the left wing and Suncroft were back in front but it was only for one minute. Celbridge drove forward and Lisa Reynor was at the end of the move to score the second Celbridge goal. Five minutes later Ellen Dowling repeated her act to complete her hat-trick and Aine Conway added a point and 2 points clear it was looking good for Suncroft. Celbridge upped their game especially central defenders, Kate McGuinness and Captain Sinead McCabe while midfielders Orla Gowran and Leah Earley began to win the midfield battle that had, up to that point, been evenly shared. Leah scored a free and when Suncroft conceded a penalty Sarah McNiffe drove it against a post and was relieved to see her colleague, Orla Gowran, expertly side foot the goal from close range. Sarah McNiffe closed out the game with 2 late points as Celbridge dominated when it counted most. Great credit to both teams for an excellent game of football in conditions which varied from sunshine at the start which was followed by a thunderstorm and after a short dry spell continuous rain set in. Suncroft goalkeeper Becky McGuirk ignored all the vagaries of the conditions to play a stormer with great assistance from defenders Carrie Sinnott, Amy Dunne, and Amy Reid. Midfielders Aoife Connolly and Emma Jane Vaughan played mightily as Ellen Dowling starred in attack with most help from Aine Conway and Kelly Hughes. The excellent Celbridge goalkeeper, Shannon Gannon, had excellent cover from Kate McGuinness, Aisling Slevin and Sinead McCabe. Orla Gowran excelled at midfield where Leah Earley was always to the fore as was her twin, Ailbhe at centre forward while with all the forwards on the score sheet it was Aisling O’Halloran, Lisa Reynor and Niamh Berry who caught the eye.
