Westmeath Edge Tyrone

Tyrone 1-10

Westmeath 3-8

Tyrone lost by four and in turn their unbeaten start to the division two campaign as three Westmeath goals proved decisive in a poor enough contest at Healy Park. Gerry Moane’s side were guilty of missed chances and had to rally after two first half goals for the Midlanders. Veteran Leona Archibald  netted a penalty  and Ciara Blundell supplied a crisp finish as he visitors led by eight points after Tyrone, through Gemma Begley and Emma Hegarty had led early on.

Rebecca McCrory and Begley had tested the Westmeath keeper Karen Walsh on more than one occasion but a total of twelve wides told it’s own story

Niamh O’Neill turned in a goal just shy of half time to cut the gap to five and Meabh Mallons early second half point brought Tyrone right back into the game. Westmeath only managed 1-2 in the second half as Tyrone bossed the half although they squandered a hatful of chances and possession.

At the back Tyrone were assured in the main but on a day when Begley and O’Neill were quieter than normal they could not reel the visitors back, they threw everything at the Leisnter side in the latter stages. O’Neill, Emma Smyth and Chloe McCaffrey took the game to a well organised Westmeath and they had chances but fell short at the last .

Next up for Tyrone are Cavan who had six points to spare over Kildare.
