Westmeath victorious against Kilkenny

Division
3B – Westmeath victorious against Kilkenny

On
Sunday the 20th of April, Westmeath travelled to
James Stephens Gaelic Grounds in Kilkenny to take
on the Kilkenny ladies. Kilkenny who have improved
immensely on previous years started off the brighter
of the sides opening the scoring with a point after
a few mins.

Westmeath were shaky to begin with but started to
settle down after Eimear Connellan pointed twice.
Fiona Claffey also pointed and Leona Archibald was
accurate with the free taking.Kilkenny registered
a few more scores and also missed a penalty towards
the end of the first half.

At the break Kilkenny were leading by a point 1-4
to 6 points. Westmeath introduced a number of sustitutes
at half time including Edel McCormack for Miriam
Kearney, Aoife McCormack for Sabrina Jackson and
Fiona Leavy for Eimear Connelan(Injured). During
the second half Westmeath upped their game and started
taking their scores. Leona Archibald had a well
taken goal. Two more subtitutes were then introduced,
Laura Halligan for Carol Finch and Ann-Marie Curran
for Celeste Dermody. After this introduction Laura
Halligan had a well taken goal after an excellent
pass from Fiona Claffey. Fiona Claffey then scored
a screamer of a goal into the top corner if the
net.

Westmeath were well on top now, but Kilkenny kept
plugging away and managed to get another penalty
and made no mistake by putting it into the bottom
left hand corner although Niamh Mulligan was unlucky
not to get a hand to it. Kilkenny then got another
goal leaving the full time score Kilkenny 3-7 Westmeath
4-12.
