Wexford 3-7 Wicklow 2-3

Leinster minor 'A' shield final

Wexford 3-7 Wicklow 2-3

A hat trick of goals from Wexfords number thirteen Aoife Morrissey sealed victory for the girls from the model county, in Dr. Cullen park on Saturday last. The quick thinking corner forward spotted the Wicklow keeper off her line, in the seventh minute, and unfortunately for Linda Dempsey, it was a case of déjà vu as Morrissey twisted the knife in the twenty fifth and twenty eight minute as the Taghmon/Camross player lobbed the ball over the exposed Wicklow net minder to raise the green flag on the double, to put the Garden county girls on the back foot.
While Morrissey was putting the ball under the bar, Wexfords Sadie Murphy notched up Wexfords first point followed by three from Catherine Doyle, who kept the umpire in charge of the white flag employed as the half time break loomed.
Wicklow opened their account in the twenty ninth minute when their number two Rachel Byrne fired the ball past Sinead Whelan as referee Mick O'Flaherty signalled for the half time break, With the score board in Dr. Cullen Park showing Wexford 3-4 Wicklow 1-0.
For Wexford it was a case of carrying on from where they left off, while for Wicklow, there was only one answer to their predicament, and that was to pile pressure on the Wexford back line and hopefully they would work their way back in to the game.
Wicklows Stephanie Doyle was first to strike as she notch up the first point of the third quarter, but it was quickly cancelled out by Wexfords top scorer Aoife Morrissey.
Wicklow introduced Claire Kavanagh into the right wing forward position and the quality of ball in to the full forward line greatly improved giving Wicklow numerous opportunities to close the gap, but with the Wexford back line of Emma Doyle, Amy Ryan and Karen Tomkins in top form they shut the door firmly to deny the Wicklow full forward line of Loretta Gilbert, Yvonne Sutton and Edwina Sawyer any scoring chances.
With only four minutes left on the clock Referee Mick O'Flaherty spread his arms out wide as he awarded a penalty to Wicklow as Loretta Gilbert was fouled in the square. Emily Hanney stepped up to take the spot kick, but Sinead Whelan was equal to the shot making a finger tip save as she dived to her left, but Hanney was quickest to pounce on to the deflected save, the Eire Og girl made no mistake second time round.
Whelan was back in action seconds later when Stephanie Doyle forced an excellent save from Wexfords number one, however it was Whelans last piece of action as she had to leave the field with an injury to her fingers.
A point from Wicklows Claire Kavanagh brought the curtain down on the Leinster minor 'A' shield final for 2008, with the referees score card reading Wexford 3-7 Wicklow 2-3.
Leinster President Bill Daly presented the shield trophy to Wexfords captain Amy Ryan, and on behalf of the Wexford team Amy dedicated their win to the late Tommy Browne (Clonee), grandfather of Peter Hayden who is manager of Sarurdays victorious Wexford minor ladies team. Bill Daly also presented Wexfords number twelve Sandra Lawlor (Ballygarrett) with the player of the match award.
