Wexford Ladies Lose to Sligo

The Wexford Ladies football team travelled to Castleconnor on the Mayo Sligo border last Sunday to take on Sligo in the Bord Gáis Energy National Football League Round 4 game, and came away suffering a heavy defeat.
The game was even enough for the first ten minutes as each side took the measure of each other. Sligo had the first score in the seventh minute, a goal by Imelda McNulty. Wexford had the next chance of a score when Natasha Martin found Sara Nolan one on one with Catriona Connolly in the Sligo goal, but before she could get her shot in the former all star had come off her line to smother the ball and clear her lines. She was to do this a few times during the game, breaking Wexford hearts. Sligo dominated the rest of the half, holding Wexford scoreless and scoring 3-10 themselves.
Wexford made a few changes at half time to try and put a few scores on the score board. Again they found this hard as Sligo were just as determined to give little away. They had another goal and four points on the board, the goal coming from Theresa Marron, before Wexford scored in the seventeenth minute. And what a score is was, Fiona Rochford received the ball forty metres out and soloed in to the twenty before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner of the Sligo net. Try as they might they still struggled for scores that their play deserved and a Natasha Martin pointed free was to be their only other score, while Sligo tagged on another goal and two points before the end to leave the score 5-16 to 1-1 at the final whistle.
Wexfords next game is on St Patrick’s Day at a home venue against Tipperary, who ended Wexfords ambitions last year in the All Ireland semi final.
