Wexford
overcome Cavan in Round 2

Suzuki
Ladies National League Round 2
Division 2
Venue: Dublin
Date: 06-02-05
Wexford 3-19 to Cavan 2-8

Wexford secured their second win of the 2005 season
when they over came Cavan in Dublin on Sunday,
on a day that was only fit for the ducks. In the
opening exchanges Wexford were the more dominant
force on the field. Thresa Walsh opened the scores
with a well taken point after a good delivery
from Leona Tector. Cavan replied with a point
at the other end with a point from Grainne Smith.
Wexford never eased of the gas with more points
coming from Caroline Murphy, Mary Lacey and Lizzy
Kent. When the ball was worked from the Wexford
goal with tremendous passing it set up duel star
Michelle Hearne for a goal to put Wexford in a
commanding lead.

Cavan were not going to let Wexford pull away
when Cavans Grainne Smith poped up to reply with
a goal it looked like Cavans confidences were
back as thy added another point. A number of fouls
on the Wexford girls resulted in frees in and
around the area resulted in more scores for Wexford.
The writing was on the wall when Maeve Quill,
Caroline Murphy and Leona Tector added more points
to the bord. Two more goals were to come before
the first half was to end coming from Clonee’s
Josie Dwyer and yet again Thresa Walsh.

At the break the Wxeford management were the happer
of the sides leading 3-8 to Cavans 1-4 With a
good lead you would think Wexford would take their
foot off the gas this was not the case. Within
a few minutes of the start more points were when
Murphy converted two frees. A number of Wexford
subs were introduces within a few minutes of the
restart. It saw Linda Casey coming in for Mary
Lacey, Catherine Doyle in for Laura Corrigan,
Ciara Scallen for Josie Dwyer and Sharon Kearns
in for Shelly Doyle and Melissa Hanly in for Helena
Nugent.

Once Wexford new look side settled into a decent
rhythm in the second half, they were far to smart
for Cavan. Nikki Scallen and Lorraine O ’Grady
won a number of high balls in the backs, while
in attack Quill, Tector and Walsh caused all sorts
of problems for a hesitant Cavan defence. On a
day were Wexford were certainly at the office
they proved too strong for Cavan. The women have
a break next weekend before they take on Limerick
at home in Wexford. Limerick the team they over
came in the league final last year, this will
prove to be a much tougher and stun test for the
ladies.
