What Happened in the Semis... Round up of Bord Gáis Energy Div 1,2 and 3 Semi Finals.

CORK and Monaghan will contest the Bord Gáis Energy Ladies National Football League Division 1 final on May 12 – a game that will be a repeat of last year’s All-Ireland senior final.

Cork defeated Meath by 3-10 to 0-10 in Sunday’s semi-final at Crettyard while Monaghan scored an impressive 2-9 to 0-7 victory over Dublin in the other semi-final, played at the Gaelic Grounds, Drogheda.

Cork are chasing a fifth successive Division 1 crown this year – and seventh in eight seasons.

But they will have to get past a fired-up Monaghan in the final to claim the silverware again as Gregory McGonagle’s charges will be out for revenge following last year’s All-Ireland final.

Cork led by 2-4 to 0-6 at the midway point at Crettyard as Rhona Ni Bhuachalla struck with a sixth minute goal before Ciara O’Sullivan added a second in the eleventh minute.

Cork had the benefit of a strong breeze in the second half and added a third goal three minutes from time through substitute Valerie Mulcahy, scorer of 1-8 in last year’s League final against Laois.

In Drogheda, meanwhile, Monaghan produced a fine display to book a place in the Division 1 decider for the first time since 2001.

Catriona McConnell and Caoimhe Mohan scored 1-3 apiece while Niamh Kindlon added two points for the Ulster outfit.

Amy Ring and Sinead Goldrick scored two points each for Dublin but this was an afternoon when the Sky Blues never got going, despite playing with the aid of the breeze in the second half.

Meanwhile, Connacht rivals Mayo and Galway will fight it out for promotion to Division 1 when they contest the Division 2 decider on May 12, a game that will form part of a triple header at Parnell Park, Dublin.

Gillian Joyce scored a late goal to seal a 3-6 to 1-10 victory over Clare while Cora Staunton scored 2-4 as Mayo defeated Kerry by 4-6 to 1-7.

Both Division 2 semi-finals were played as part of a double-header at Banagher and Clare can count themselves unlucky not to have come through to the final.

At half-time, Clare led by 1-8 to 2-1 but Noelle Comyn’s Banner County had played with a strong first half breeze and were undone by a spirited Galway fightback.

In the second semi-final, Mayo led by 2-2 to 1-4 at half-time against Kerry, having played against the wind in the opening half.

Staunton was the star of the show for Mayo once again as Sarah Roe and Niamh Kelly chipped in with the other goals for the side managed by Fr. Mike Murphy and Jimmy Corbett.

Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh finished as Kerry’s leading scorer with a haul of 1-2 while Mayo’s other two points were supplied by Staunton’s Carnacon clubmate Fiona McHale.

The Division 3 final will be contested by Leitrim and Westmeath, meanwhile, after the counties scored semi-final victories over Ulster teams Down and Armagh respectively.

Gifted forward Áine Tighe bagged 0-5 for Leitrim in their 1-11 to 0-7 victory over Down as Ciara Keegan weighed in with 1-2.

Leitrim had much of the hard work done by half-time in Clones, having established a 1-6 to 0-3 interval lead.

At the Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda, Westmeath ran out 5-6 to 1-7 winners against Armagh, with Ciara Blundell scoring a brace of goals.

Karen Hegarty, Laura Walsh and Ruth Kearney were the other goalscorers for the Lake County, who led by 3-3 to 1-5 at half-time.

Caroline O’Hanlon had given Armagh real hope on the stroke of half-time with a goal from a penalty but Westmeath, All-Ireland intermediate champions and Division 4 winners in 2011, held their nerve in the second half and are just an hour away from possibly collecting more silverware.
