Wicklow Ladies Round Up

WICKLOW
ROUND-UP

Wicklow senior league
EAST VERUS WEST Kilbride 6-8 v/s Arklow Geraldines
Ballymoney 7-3

Kilbrides Carmel Craul’s goal in the final seconds
of the game sealed victory, and secured the home
sides first points of the season. Leading by five
points at the break, Kilbride seemed to be in
control of the game. However a spirited fight
back by the Arklow side in the second half ensured
that the west Wicklow side were going to have
to fight to the end if they were going to be the
victors at full time.

Arklow did have a number of scorable chances in
injury time, but it was a determined Kilbride
side that held their nerve and came away with
all the points on the day. Deirdre O’Riordan controlled
midfield for the home side, O’ Riordan also notched
up three goals and a point for her side.

Best for the visitors was Arklow’s half forward
Liz Fahy, once Fahy picks up the ball and turns
she sets her sight on one target only and that
is the back of the oppositions goal, however her
tally of five goals and one point on the day was
not enough to give her side victory. Despite very
poor weather conditions both sides played free
flowing football, and exchanged scores throughout
the game, Kilbride lead for over half the game
with scores from O’ Riordan, Jean Duffy and Sharon
kelly. Arklow went in to the lead by a point ten
minutes into the second with a goal from the boot
of Fahy, and the seasiders held their lead for
the next ten minutes, during the final quarter
of the game both sides were level three times, and
lady luck was on the home side when a penalty
was awarded to the visitors, Liz Fahy stepped
up and side footed the ball to the back of Aoife
O’Riordan’s net. But before the celebrations could
begin the ref deemed that players had encroached
in to the square, the spot kick had to be retaken,
Fahy opted for power second time round and her
shot skimmed the outside of the post and wide,
despite a last gasp point on the stroke of full
time from Arklow’s Mary Forde, it was Kilbride
that run out winners in the end.
