WRAP: HEC Leagues get underway

Compiled by Ladies HEC PRO Marisa Kennedy

The 2022 HEC Leagues got underway this week with action across six of the seven divisions.

It was a busy week for DCU Dóchas Éireann who had five teams competing in the opening round. DCU DÉ 1 recorded an impressive 4-09 to 0-4 win over Dublin rivals UCD to get their Division 1 title defence off to an ideal start.

The two colleges also met in Division 2 with DCU DÉ once again emerging victorious with a 7-11 to 2-09 victory. The other fixtures in the opening round of Division 2 saw Maynooth University 1 narrowly edging TUS Midlands 1 by two points while Ulster University Jordanstown had eight points to spare over Trinity College 1. Meanwhile, MTU Kerry showed positive early signs with a 3-13 to 1-10 win over UL 2.

DKIT made an impressive start to their Division 3 campaign, firing seven goals past St Mary’s 1 while it was the clash of the neighbours in the division’s other fixture with SETU Carlow comfortably seeing off SETU Waterford on a scoreline of 3-11 to 0-06.

Division 4 saw the third meeting of the week between DCU DÉ and UCD with DCU DÉ 4 securing a 5-19 to 1-01 victory over UCD 3. Meanwhile, Queens’ second team were in action against Ulster University Magee Campus with the Derry side taking home an 11-point win.

There was another strong win for DCU DÉ in Division 5 as their fifth team saw off TUD Blanchardstown by 5-11 to 1-12. The division’s other opening fixture was another all-Dublin affair with three goals apiece recorded by Marino 1 and TUD City Campus 1 with TUD seeing off their rivals by six points.

Division 6 also got underway this week with a DCU DÉ team recording the college’s only loss of the opening round, losing out to TUD City Campus 2 by 6-13 to 4-06. There were goals galore across this division with the highlight being a one-point thriller between Trinity College 2 and RCSI, Trinity edging that game on a scoreline of 4-09 to 5-05. The other results saw ATU Mayo beating out TUS Midlands 2 by 3-09 to 3-06 while Mary Immaculate College Thurles Campus recorded a 3-09 to 3-05 away victory against ATU Sligo 2.
